“Be My Own Boss” Continues to Rank as No. 1 Motivation in Small-Business Ownership Survey

The pandemic has not changed the primary drivers of business ownership — independence and controlling your own destiny remain the most powerful motivations for owning a business. In fact, working for oneself is the No. 1  reason cited by entrepreneurs researching ownership across the leading  network of online franchise information directory brands

  • “Be my own boss” was the No. 1 reason selected when asked “Why do you want to own your own business?”, with 88.4% of the responses in Q2 2020. That’s down slightly from 86.7% in Q1, but the same response rate as Q4 2019.
  • The survey allowed multiple responses, and many entrepreneurs also selected “Income Potential” as an additional reason – it ranked a strong No. 2, with 71% […]

Federal Accounting Standards Board (FASB) delayed implementation of their ASC 606 revenue recognition rules for one year!

2020-04-08T20:27:05+00:00April 8th, 2020|Franchise News|0 Comments

Dear IFA Member:

I am writing to share an important, exciting – and non-coronavirus – piece of good news. This morning, the Federal Accounting Standards Board (FASB) delayed implementation of their ASC 606 revenue recognition rules for one year!

While addressing the economic impacts of COVID-19 has been our primary focus over the last month, we have continued to press forward with our other franchising priorities, particularly the 606 recognition rules as FDD filing deadlines loom ahead.

Over the last several weeks, IFA staff and members have had several important and direct conversations with FASB, including with the current Chair, Russell Golden, and other members of the Board and technical staff. Today’s announcement is the result of that – it’s even more impressive that this delayed implementation is exclusive to franchises!

Following this morning’s decision, FASB will begin the process of taking public comment on an alternative accounting standard for private sector businesses (an “expedient”) that will […]

TURNING THE FRANCHISE BUSINESS BACK ON

TURNING THE FRANCHISE BUSINESS BACK ON

Re-Opening Soon

THE DRAMATIC MORPHING, SCALING BACK AND, IN MANY CASES, SHUTDOWN OF FRANCHISING DUE TO SOCIAL DISTANCING IS GOING TO END SOON. NOW IS THE TIME TO PLAN HOW TO SCALE YOUR FRANCHISE SYSTEM BACK UP.

By MSA Worldwide

We are living through unprecedented times, with an uncertain timeline for when any sense of normalcy will return. The government’s guidance for re-opening parts of the economy has continued to change as circumstances on the ground change; it may be summer before we begin to see some franchise systems open again for business. Since the shutdown we have been […]

Buyer Sentiment Survey: Franchise Inquirers Looking Past Pandemic Effects

Respondents to a March 17-19, 2020 poll of aspiring franchise owners showed slightly more reserve than in previous surveys, but less than one would imagine given the impact of Covid-19 on business and the markets. Granted, these respondents are stepping forward at a time like this to consider business ownership, so they do not represent the general population or overall consumer confidence.

Do You Agree that Now is a Good Time to Start a Business?

Over 55% agree or strongly agree that “now is a good time.” For context, this may be explained by the time horizon for the search process — 48% of respondents expect to start a business within the next three months, and another 16 percent within four to six months.

Are you more or […]

Franchise group calls for $300 billion in federal assistance

2020-03-20T17:54:14+00:00March 20th, 2020|Franchise News|1 Comment

The International Franchise Association (IFA) is asking congressional leadership for the creation of a $300 billion fund to provide liquidity to franchises struggling through the coronavirus pandemic.

Up to 393,000 franchise jobs could be lost from a 90-day shutdown, the IFA warned. The U.S. franchising community is comprised of more than 733,000 establishments that employ over 7 million individuals and contribute $674.4 billion to the U.S. economy.

The IFA also found that approximately 20,000 to 30,000 franchise businesses will lose liquidity in the next 45 days if immediate relief is not provided.

It is calling for the creation of a Treasury Department-administered Small Business Workforce Stabilization Fund and Small Business Stabilization Account to provide immediate support to employers that keep employees on payroll and streamlined access to capital so businesses can grow when the epidemic passes.

“IFA members include franchise companies in over 300 different business format categories, from hotels to restaurants, hair salons to in-home health […]

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back … That’s Franchise Law Right Now

2020-02-21T15:38:28+00:00February 21st, 2020|Franchise News|0 Comments

It not clear that laws should be made based on cases involving one franchisor, but lately it seems that McDonald’s is at the center of some important legal issues for franchising in the United States.

It not clear that laws should be made based on cases involving one franchisor, but lately it seems that McDonald’s is at the center of some important legal issues for franchising in the United States.

The looming question for franchising since the 2015 National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) decision in the Browning-Ferris Industries case has been the joint employer standard. For the 30 years prior to Browning-Ferris Industries, the NLRB consistently maintained that to find a joint employer relationship, two separate entities must share “direct and immediate” control over the essential terms of employment. In Browning-Ferris, the NLRB decided that a staffing […]

City gets two new Lapels, converted from what were Hudson Cleaners

Both locations are owned and operated by franchisees, Phillip and Joy Baker of Reddington Shore. The new locations are located at 11209 N. Dale Mabry Highway and 4920 Newkirk Drive, it notes.

“We are delighted to bring the Lapels Dry Cleaning experience to Hudson Cleaners customers and more Tampa residents,” says Phillip Baker. “We use a sustainable, non-toxic method for drycleaning clothes. Subsequently, clothes feel better when you wear them and last longer.”

Prior to Lapels, Phillip was a finance executive in the healthcare industry and Joy an active real estate agent, the company relates. With a desire to step out of the corporate world and be his own boss, he searched for a franchise opportunity […]
